If another driver hits you on Santa Fe Drive and has no insurance, or only Colorado’s 25/50/15 minimum, who pays for your medical bills and lost wages? For many Englewood families, the answer is their own Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage.
How Common Are Uninsured Drivers in Colorado?
Insurance Research Council estimates have put Colorado’s share of uninsured drivers in the mid-to-high teens, roughly one driver in six, which is well above the national average. Many more drivers carry only the state minimum, which may not cover a serious injury.
What UM/UIM Covers
- Uninsured Motorist (UM): pays for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or leaves the scene in a hit-and-run.
- Underinsured Motorist (UIM): pays when the at-fault driver’s liability limits are too low to cover your injuries.
- It typically covers you, your household family members, and your passengers, including when you’re a pedestrian or cyclist hit by a car.
Colorado’s Rules
Colorado insurers must offer UM/UIM coverage at limits equal to your liability coverage, and you can only reject it in writing. Since 2008, Colorado UIM coverage is added on top of the at-fault driver’s liability payment instead of being reduced by it. If the other driver has $25,000 in coverage and your injuries total $100,000, your UIM can pay toward the remaining $75,000, up to your limit.
UM/UIM covers injuries, not damage to your car. In Colorado, your car’s damage from an uninsured driver is usually handled through your Collision coverage, minus your deductible.
How Much Should You Carry?
We generally recommend matching your UM/UIM limits to your liability limits, such as 100/300 or higher. It is usually one of the most affordable coverages on your policy for the protection it provides. Learn more about uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage or request a quote.
