Colorado requires every registered vehicle to carry auto liability insurance, and police can check for proof of insurance at any traffic stop. Driving uninsured can cost far more than the premium you saved.

What Colorado Requires

Colorado’s minimum liability limits are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 for property damage. You must keep proof of insurance in your vehicle, and a digital ID card on your phone is accepted.

Penalties for Driving Without Insurance

  • First offense: a misdemeanor traffic offense with a minimum $500 fine, points on your license, and suspension of your license until you provide proof of insurance.
  • Second offense within five years: a minimum $1,000 fine and a four-month license suspension.
  • Third or later offense: a minimum $1,000 fine and an eight-month suspension.

Courts can also order community service, and if you cause a crash without insurance, you can be personally responsible for the other driver’s medical bills and car repairs.

SR-22 Requirements

After an uninsured driving conviction, Colorado generally requires an SR-22, a certificate your insurer files with the Division of Motor Vehicles to prove you carry coverage, usually for three years. If the policy lapses, the insurer notifies the DMV and your license can be suspended again. Learn more about SR-22 insurance.
